With the stresses of everyday life, sometimes all you want to do is get away from it all, even if only for a little while. Beach holidays are an obvious choice – it’s easy to get lost in your thoughts relaxing on a soft, sandy beach with the sound of the waves and a light breeze cooling you down in the hot afternoon sun. But it’s not only beaches that you can experience complete relaxation when on holiday. Cyprus offers plenty of natural attractions for a peaceful break, and could cost much less than other holiday destinations.
Apart from the white sandy beaches, here are some of the other peaceful beauty spots in Cyprus:
Lakes and wetlands
There are many saltwater lakes and other wetland areas, such as dams, in Cyprus that provide the perfect place to sit, relax and contemplate. If you also enjoy bird watching, the wetlands offer a prime position to spot the many different species of bird on the island – there is thought to be nearly 400. The Limassol Salt Lake is the largest lake on the island and attracts wading birds such as the Greater Flamingos. The second largest saltwater lake is the Larnaca Salt Lake, which is also an important territory for birds, and is therefore a protected area.
There are a few small waterfalls in Cyprus where you can experience tranquil surroundings and listen to the therapeutic sound of the flowing water. A short stroll from Platres, which is mostly shaded, and you will reach the Millomeris Waterfalls. Standing beneath the waterfall to cool down from the heat will be truly refreshing, with the cascading water relieving the stress from your shoulders.
If you enjoy walking to clear your mind of thoughts, there is lots of choice in Cyprus. Whether you choose to trek across mountains or prefer the lush green forest, or even strolling along the coast, you can create your own route and explore nature at its best. There are also plenty of hiking and walking trails available that are recommended by other visitors and locals if you would rather follow a planned route.
How about taking a few hours to sit among the trees? A wide variety of tree species can be found on the island including pines (one of the most common trees here, and they can be found in forests), cedar, golden oak and eucalyptus. Some of the trees have been described as a natural monument and are over 100 years old.
